An Imari Vase and Cover depicting Karashishi [Lion Dogs]
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Oviform with a short neck, decorated in iron-red, purple, dark brown enamels, pink wash and gilt on underglaze blue with ho-o birds and bold sprays of chrysanthemums and peonies below elaborate swags of various brocade designs and panels depicting karashishi [lion dogs] amongst peonies at the shoulder, the neck with a band of kikko hanabishi [floral diaper work], the tall domed cover similarly decorated, the finial modelled as a karashishi on rockwork
