A Lacquered Copper Tobacco Box depicting a Chinese Landscape
Edo period (late 18th - early 19th century)
The rectangular copper box with hinged cover and canted corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a Chinese style landscape with pavilions, rocks and trees amongst water beneath the moon, framed by a band of sprinkled shell inlay, the sides with flower sprays similarly inlaid, gold lacquer rim, the interior black lacquer with an inscription in gold lacquer that can be read Sh. J. Macares
