A Pair of Fine and Rare Designed Imari Chargers
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Each decorated in iron-red and gilt on underglaze blue with a central roundel depicting a pavilion with a mother and a child boy behind the veranda and two ladies on the upper floor, in the garden a lady and her attendant in conversation on the bridge, surrounded by blossoming cherry, chrysanthemum and peony beneath clouds, the rim with open and closed books with geometric designs and various flowers and plants including maple, chrysanthemum, peony and cherry, reserved on a blue ground with peony and karakusa, the reverse with sprays of peony, plum and chrysanthemum, a band of geometric design around the footring
