A Vividly Enamelled Imari Bowl
Edo period (late 17th century)
The slightly-faceted circular bowl with lobed everted rim, decorated in iron-red, yellow, green, light blue, aubergine and black enamels and gilt on underglaze blue, the interior with a pomegranate spray surrounded by a broad band depicting sprays of chrysanthemum and autumn grasses, beneath a band of chrysanthemum and geometric design, the exterior with four shaped panels alternately containing chrysanthemums and kikyo [Chinese bellflowers], divided by prunus trees, above a band of geometric design, a band of half-flowerheads to the footring, the rim with a band of chrysanthemum and foliage
