Lot Essay

Ian Auld was a very influential slab-builder of ceramics, concentrating a large proportion of his career to the technique. His work as a potter began in 1951 when he was taught by William Newland, and in 1954 he was asked to establish a pottery department at the Baghdad Art School. He spent almost three years in the Middle East and as a result, Middle Eastern art became one of the influences on his work.

In the case of this vase, the impressed decorations are in fact based on African coins and other ethnographic ornaments.
