Ian Auld was a very influential slab-builder of ceramics, concentrating a large proportion of his career to the technique. His work as a potter began in 1951 when he was taught by William Newland, and in 1954 he was asked to establish a pottery department at the Baghdad Art School. He spent almost three years in the Middle East and as a result, Middle Eastern art became one of the influences on his work.
