Lot Essay

Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie is considered one of the pioneer woman of British studio ceramics. She studied ceramics at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London (1921-23) and her formative training was a year spent in St Ives at the Leach Pottery in 1924. She then set up the Cole Pottery at Mill Cottage, assisted by Ada (Peter) Mason, where they experimented with wood and vegetable ash glazes on individual stoneware pots and vases. In 1946 she moved to Kilmington Manor, Wiltshire and there built an oil-fired kiln, replaced by an electric one in 1960. She continued to exhibit in the sixties and seventies.
