A massive wheel-thrown earthenware teapot, decorated with a brushed design in white slip under a greenish-yellow glaze, attached iron handle with reffia binding, two pairs of impressed MC and Winchcombe seals to the edge of the foot and to the base and a further pair to the interior of the lid

Lot Essay

The iron handle would have been made to order by a local blacksmith. Cardew's diary records visits to his forge for the fitting of handles to the larger than standard teapots. This size teapot was originally commissioned for use at the tennis parties held by one particular customer.
