A Monumental and Impressive Pair of Satsuma Vases and Covers
Signed Dai Nihon Kinkozan kore (wo) tsukuru and Kyoto Hakubyakuken gako, Meiji Period (late 19th century)
Each decorated in various coloured enamels and gilt with four panels, the first depicting Chinese female immortals on clouds, peony issuing from rockwork, pavilions and mountains in the distance, the second with butterflies amongst peonies and flowering cherry trees, the third depicting Chinese officials in a snow-covered landscape and the fourth with birds amongst further flowers; all divided by bands with flowers and roundels against a seigaiha [stylised wave design] ground, each vase with four half chrysanthemum flowerheads applied to each shoulder, bands of various brocade designs to the necks and feet, the stands and covers similarly decorated, the finials in the form of sacred pearls with floral roundels
