Two Large Elegant Hirado Vases
Meiji period (late 19th century)
A vase of globular form with broad flaring neck and mythical beast handles, decorated in underglaze blue with continuous design of three cranes in a grove of small pines and billowing clouds to the lower body, the neck with a crane in flight and scrolling clouds on each side and further clouds above the handles, all below the overlapping lappet bands with stylised cloud design, a key fret border to the rim
Another vase in globular form with a flattened mouth, two moulded dragons wrapped around the neck, the lower body decorated in underglaze blue with a continuous design of a dragon emerging from tempestuous waves, the upper body with stylised clouds, the foot with a band of stylised wave design
31cm. high (vase with mythical beast handles), 24.8cm. high (vase with dragons)
