Woodblock print surimono, from a series of prints of the actors Ichikawa Danjuro I-VII, embellished with metallic pigments, each signed Toyokuni hitsu, circa 1820s, comprising:
‌1) Genso Saigyu Danjuro (The First Danjuro, Saigyu)
‌2) Nidaime Dai Hakuen Danjuro (The Second Danjuro, Great Hakuen)
‌3) Yondaime Kiba Danjuro (The Fourth Danjuro, Kiba)

Shikishiban surimono:
‌1) & 3): 7¹⁄₈ x 6⁷⁄₈ in. (18.1 x 17.5 cm.)

Lot Essay

The present series of Danjuro lineage portraits was first commissioned by the Gogawa poetry club to Toyokuni I around 1820s. There is a later version of the same designs produced by Toyokuni II in 1830s, which comes with different poems and does not show the Gogawa mark on borders.
