Lot Essay

The present series of Danjuro lineage portraits was first commissioned by the Gogawa poetry club to Toyokuni I around 1820s. There is a later version of the same designs produced by Toyokuni II in 1830s, which comes with different poems and does not show the Gogawa mark on borders. A complete set of the series by Toyokuni I in the collection of National Diet Library, Japan (https://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/1307496?tocOpened=1&itemId=info%3Andljp%2Fpid%2F1307496&__lang=en).
