Lot Essay

Although little is known about Fujimaro, he mainly produced paintings of beauties and never worked on woodblock prints. He is thought to be a pupil of Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806) but the details of his career are unclear. Initially painting Utamaro-style beauties, he gradually developed his own distinctive style painting of beauties with slender faces and slanting eyes.
A painting by the same artist is in the collection of the Portland Art Museum, Oregon, see http://portlandartmuseum.us/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record;id=12532;type=101
