Lot Essay

The beautifully-dressed woman holds a sumo loin cloth inscribed with the character meaning thunder. Bando Mitsugoro III played the wrestler Kaminari Tsurunosuke in the play Sugata no Hana Azuma no Datezome, performed at the Ichimura theatre in March 1812.

Shunman was a celebrated painter, print-maker and author of the Edo period (1615-1868). As a print-maker, he specialised in surimono.
