Japanese Prints

Christie’s presents an online sale dedicated to Japanese woodblock prints including works by many of the most important artists from the 18th century through to the 20th century. The scope of subjects used by Japanese print artists was extensive and the sale includes dramatic warrior designs, beautifully dressed women and courtesans, actors on stage, comical prints and landscapes; each giving a fascinating glimpse into life in Japan which has long since disappeared.

When viewed in the context of today’s manga or graphic design, Japanese prints were ahead of their time. Elements such as the use of flat areas of bold colour, lack of perspective and compositional freedom gained from placing subjects off-centre, are known to have directly influenced many important artists from around the world from the late 19th century Impressionists, through to contemporary artists.
