Lot Essay

This design is Kuniyoshi's dramatic depiction of a story written by a 19th century poet who in turn based it on a 13th century tale of Shogun Yoriie commanding the strongman Asaina Saburo to perform a trial of strength with Wada Shinzaemon-no-jo Tsunemori. Asaina ends up fighting two crocodiles in the waves in an extraordinary display of his strength. See T. Clark, Kuniyoshi: From the Arthur R. Miller Collection, (Royal Academy of Arts, 2009), cat. 28, p. 81.
