Lot Essay

Kawase Hasui is widely regarded as one of the most talented and prolific shin hanga artists of the early 20th century. Producing a large number of over 600 woodblock prints, it is generally felt that Hasui's best work was done early in his career. As an unfortunate result of the 1923 Kanto earthquake, the woodblocks for his earliest prints were destroyed and the designs were never later re-printed. Therefore any prints dating from this "pre-earthquake" period, such as this example, are highly sought after.
