Lot Essay

Despite its beautiful scenery with Mount Fuji in the distance, the Hakone pass was an extremely challenging route for travellers. Here a long procession is shown winding its way up a steep incline. This design demonstrates Hiroshige's extraordinary skill of converting nature into graphic composition.
