In this design Watonai (Kato Kiyomasa) is depicted attacking a huge tiger which has slain one of his men, shown hanging from its jaws, whilst three further warriors attack another tiger hanging from a cliff.

Kato Kiyomasa (1562-1611), was a courageous soldier who served under the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was also famous for his exploits in Korea; this triptych is a depiction of one of his battles there.

Another impression of this design is in the collections of the British Museum, see www.britishmuseum.org museum number 2008,3037.18502.
