Lot Essay

There is no known impression which survives from this design however there is a single sheet print of the same subject, also by Kuniyoshi, showing Yamamoto Kansuke fighting a a giant wild boar in the snow. See www.mfa.org accession number 11.26080.

The print is accompanied by a photocopied letter from B.W. Robinson giving his opinion on this work to the owner in 1987. He details the subject given above and indicates a date of around 1852.
