Lot Essay

The young Minamoto warrior Sanada no Yoichi (centre) fights the Taira supporter Matano no Goro (right) at the Battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180. Sanada attempts to cut the throat of Matano with his sword, however clotted blood from an earlier fight has dried within his weapon, stopping him from drawing it from it's scabbard. Despite this, Sanada manages to slash Matano. However Matano's supporters arrive and slay Sanada.
