Lot Essay

The heavily tattooed Rorihakucho Chojun (Zhang Shun) smashes through a water-gate in a hail of arrows, a sword between his teeth. He subsequently dies due to the injuries inflicted during this attack.

The Water Margin is a Chinese adventure story set at the end of the Northern Song period (960-1125). Kuniyoshi's series of prints depicting the story achieved great success and revitalised the warrior print genre. See also lots 13 and 35.
