The painting has a discoloured appearance with an uneven surface gloss. The surface of the paint is dry though appears generally stable.
Support:
The canvas has been subject to relining and remains stable. There is a perpendicular tear to the original canvas in the upper right hand corner of approximately 2 x 3 cm. There is a tear to the upper left hand corner of the original canvas.
Paint layer:
The shrinkage craquelure, evident across the surface, is characteristic of this period and artist's use of unstable materials. The drawing, modelling and details remain appreciable.
Varnish:
Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms the complexity of the surface of the painting with sunken aged varnish, retouching of the shrinkage cracks and strengthening to the head and elsewhere.
Frame:
The carved and gilded frame has several missing decorative elements from the upper corners.
