The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The surface of the paint has been affected by the relining treatment. In a raking light old stretcher bar marks can be seen to the edges of the canvas. There has been some retouching to the flesh tones. There is an old varnish that carries some dirt. Examination under UV confirms the aforementioned retouching to the flesh tones. There is retouching to the whites of the costume. There is some scattered retouching to the background and jacket. Further examination is prevented by a thick cloudy varnish.
