The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is unlined; it is held under tension and remains stable. There are two tears in the upper right quadrant, one measuring 6 cm. and the other 3 cm. There is a small tear to the upper left quadrant of 2 cm. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the paint surface, more pronounced in the sitter's head. There is historic varnish that carries some dirt. Old stretcher bar marks are visible. There is evidence of some historic, inactive woodworm to the lower right. There is no evidence of live woodworm. There are frame abrasions to the canvas edges. Examination under UV light reveals some minor scattered retouching and infill to the craquelure. The paint is stable.
