The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The edge of the original canvas can be seen at upper right, where the picture does not sit quite flush with the frame. There is a repaired perpendicular tear to the original canvas in the background at upper left, of approximately 8 x 5 cm. There is a perpendicular tear through both canvas layers in the sitter's cuff at lower left of approximately 5 x 2 cm. There is a very small spot of paint loss to the right of the sword pommel. At the lower edge the old stretcher mark can be seen. In natural light retouching to the sitter's face can be seen. The upper paint glazes have thinned slightly in various areas, notably the darker passages. There is a pattern of craquelure that can be seen across the paint surface. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned restoration and retouching. There is a cloudy varnish that precludes further examination, although there is suggestion of further scattered retouching.
