The canvas has been subject to quite a strict relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light. The paint surface has been affected by the relining process. In a raking light a circular area of restoration is visible in the lower left corner. Examination under UV light reveals extensive retouching to the face, jacket and background. The paint layer is stable.
