The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The relining process has slightly thinned some of the upper paint glazes. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface; the paint remains stable. In natural light there is evidence of retouching to the sky, specific note should be taken of the upper left-hand corner. There is an old varnish that carries some dirt, this varnish has slightly flaked at lower centre. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching. It reveals further scattered retouching, notably strenghtening to the figural group lower left and a section to the edge of the canvas at upper centre. There are two repaired tears at lower right; one vertical of approximately 30 cm. and one perpendicular of approximately 5 x 5 cm.
