Lot Essay

Emile Wauters was a pupil of J.F.Portaels at the Bruxells Academy. Wauters painted Florence Sharon, later Lady Fermor-Hesketh in 1895, see Easton Neston; sold Sotheby's house sale, 17-19 May 2005, lot 197 (£24,000, including premium) and it likely this self-portrait was a gift to Lady Fermor-Hesketh or her mother at this time.
