The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas is held under tension and remains stable. There is a small isolated damage in the upper centre, above the sitter’s head (visible in the illustration). In raking light, numerous restored damages are visible particularly in the background surrounding the sitter, as well as overpaint around the sitter’s hand holding the gloves. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals a thick layer of aged, obscuring varnish, as well as some infilling of the craquelure. The artist's rendering of the gentleman’s face retains clarity and remains appreciable.
