The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The paint surface has been somewhat affected by the relining process. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface of the pant. Old retouchings to the craquelure have discoloured, as is visible to the sitter's decolletage. Despite this, the intelligent modeling of the face and the details of the costume, especially the hair ornaments, are very well preserved. There has been some frame abrasion to the edges of the canvas. Examination under UV light confirms the old retouching to the craquelure. The background has quite extensive retouching. There is a restored vertical tear of approximately 7 cm. to the right of the sitter's neck. There is a restored horizontal tear of approximately 5 cm. extending from the centre of the right edge. The paint is stable.
