Lot Essay

The label to the interior of this coronation robe almost certainly refers to James Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde (1844-1919) and with the dating of the Ede and Ravenscroft label relates to the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, although it is likely the robe itself is of an earlier date. The Marquess was the last of his family to live at Kilkenny Castle, the contents of which were sold in 1935. The 3rd Marquess married Lady Harriet Grosvenor, the daughter of Hugh, 1st Duke of Westminster.
