The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The figure has been cut from her original canvas, in two sections, namely from the upper edge to below her hands and then the skirt, these two sections of the original canvas have then been laid down on a canvas support. The joins are visible in a raking light. There has been some lifiting to the paint on her upper right shoulder, with an associated paint loss, as visible in the photograph. There is some bubbling to the background in the upper right-hand corner. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to the reds of the costume, retouching to the face and scattered retouching to the background. It also shows that the costume of the sitter has been altered at shoulder level, where they originally would have been an extension to her ruff. The paint and support remain stable.
