The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents well in natural light, with the modeling of the face well preserved. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The relining process has caused some thinning to the upper paint glazes. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface, notably in the flesh tones. The paint remains stable. Examination under UV light reveals two small spots of retouching to the face - on the nose and forehead. There is a cloudy varnish that precludes further examination.
