Lot Essay

Friedrich Becker (1922-1997) was an internationally renowned goldsmith who is best known for his kinetic jewellery and kinetic objects. He was a professor at Düsseldorf’s Arts and Crafts School and became an important influence on the development of jewellery design in the modernist tradition; as early as the 1950s Becker had developed the new concept of hidden mountings with interchangeable gem stones and by the 1960s this led him to kinetics, the fourth dimension in jewellery design: movement.
