MASRIERA

Son of the well known painter of the same name, Luis Masriera was born in 1872, into a family of jeweLlers and goldsmiths established in Barcelona since 1839. At the age of 17, Luis went to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, where he learnt about the technique of enameling under the watch of the famous enameller Edward Lossier. In 1900, he visited the Centennial Exhibition in Paris, were he was confronted by the idea of Art Nouveau and the great work of René Lalique, which would influence him and his art.

Turning back to Barcelona as he became the new artistic director of the family firm, he took with him the experience and ideas he developed abroad. Masriera decided to melt down all of his family jewels to redesign the pieces and launch his own Art Nouveau style, which immediately became an overwhelming success. With a meticulous eye for detail, his designs were intimate and delicate. He passed away in 1958. Today, his work lives on through the Bagues-Masriera brand, which was established in 1895.
