Chatoyancy, often referred to as the "cat's eye effect," is an optical phenomenon observed in certain gemstones where a bright band of light appears to move across the surface when the stone is cut into a cabochon shape (rounded, not faceted). This effect resembles the slit of a cat's eye and is caused by the reflection of light off parallel needle-like inclusions or fibrous structures within the gemstone.
The greater the transparency of the stone, and the fewer visible inclusions, the more valuable the gemstone becomes. Lot 280 exhibits exceptional transparency, making it a unique and rare specimen of significant worth.
