Lot Essay

The design of this necklace is based on an ancient Greek example discovered at Melos, dating from around 330-300 BC. Said necklace was once owned by the jeweller Alessandro Castellani before being acquired by the British Museum in 1872. This inspired many later copies, including ones by Castellani and Mellilo as well as the present lot.
