Green diamonds are very rare in nature and the color typically results when the diamonds are exposed to radiation, which disrupts carbon atoms in the crystal lattice. Green can also result from the addition of nitrogen or hydrogen atoms in the diamond crystal. Historically, green diamonds have been a challenge for laboratories to determine whether the cause of the color is natural, or human intervention, as the radiation from both methods is similar. Fortunately, testing today at the Gemological Institute of America is very advanced and this determination can now be made.
