Lot Essay

The present bracelet was originally owned by Queen Olga of Greece, born Grand Duchess Olga Constantinova of Russia, daughter of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich and Grand Duchess Alexandra, the former Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg.

Olga, niece to Tsar Alexander II, was raised in Pavlovsk Palace, an architectural masterpiece designed by Scottish architect Charles Cameron for Catherine the Great’s son Paul. When in 1796 he ascended the throne as Tsar Paul I, Pavlovsk became an official imperial residence for the Romanovs. It was there, at the age of fifteen, that Olga was introduced to King George I of Greece with whom she would fall in love and soon after marry.
