Sylvia Pedlar (1900-1972) was a prominent American lingerie designer and president of Iris Lingerie for 40 years. She is credited with adapting the Roman toga to the seductive American nightgown, popularizing the long-sleeved lace-trimmed nightgown and chemise slip. Mrs. Pedlar won three American Fashion Critics Coty awards for her designs, was internationally recognized, and friendly with designers such as Dior and Givenchy, who would visit Iris when in New York. Examples of her designs are part of the permanent collections at the Met’s Costume Institute, as well as the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection.
