Since its founding in 1948, David Webb has been acclaimed for its iconic unisex designs inspired by unconventional motifs. In the mid-1960s, Webb introduced the Maltese cross motif into its collections, reimagining the traditional emblem as a contemporary statement. The motif was developed in a myriad of renditions of brooches and pendants, often featuring semi-precious stones like coral as the four arms of the cross, accented by various gemstones that imbued each piece with liveliness. The motif was highly sought after by renowned collectors, including Elizabeth Taylor who famously wore an early example of the design at a press conference in New York for the premier of Doctor Faustus in 1968. The present lot is an exceptional example of the timeless motif.
