Lot Essay

Joy Tait Casciato (1940 – 2023) was an educator, homemaker, and devoted mother whose life was defined by her love of family, learning, and the natural world. Born to Leslie and Clara Tait, Joy pursued higher education at Santa Barbara University before earning her bachelor's degree from UCLA. She later obtained her teaching credential and began her career as an elementary school teacher.

A distant relative of the Hohenzollern family of Germany, Joy grew up in Burbank, Calif. on Groton Drive. Her mother and father were both from Nebraska and her grandmother settled in Solvang, where she spent her summers when she was a little girl.

While her husband, Dr. Dennis Casciato, attended medical school, Joy balanced teaching with supporting their growing family. As their sons were raised in the San Fernando Valley, she dedicated herself to creating a warm and nurturing home. She also contributed to her husband's medical practice as its billing manager, demonstrating her strong organizational skills and commitment to their shared endeavors.

She also had a deep and profound love for art. She taught Art Appreciation classes in her son’s schools and studied paintings and art in Germany and Italy where she and Dennis lived early in their marriage. From this love of art came a love of gemstones.

Joy found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She had a lifelong passion for horses, cherished her dogs, expressed her creativity through art, and took pride in cultivating the beautiful rose gardens at her home in Bell Canyon. Known for her generosity, kindness, and thoughtfulness, she was deeply devoted to her family and maintained a tradition of sending heartfelt Christmas cards that kept loved ones connected year after year.

Joy’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and enduring love lives on. She lived up to her name to the fullest.
