Lot Essay

In Roman Catholicism, Our Lady of Guadalupe, also referred to as the Virgin of Guadalupe, is the apparition of Mary that appeared to Juan Diego and Juan Bernardino in 1531. Although she did not receive canonical coronation from Pope Leo XIII until 1895, she was embraced and celebrated by the Mexican people as early as the mid-eighteenth century. Signaled by her cloak and the crescent moon on which she stands, Our Lady of Guadalupe became a popular devotional figure and eventually a national symbol of Mexico.
