Lot Essay

Count Francesco Matarazzo (1854 – 1937) was born in Salerno, Italy and at the age of 27 emigrated to Sao Paulo with his family. He and his brothers went on to found a company that focused on the production and distribution of lard. They also imported wheat flour from the United States.

By 1900, Matarazzo built a mill in San Paulo after facing difficulties with importation due to the Spanish-American War. Thereafter, his business empire expanded rapidly and led to the development of 365 factories throughout Brazil. At the time 6% of Brazil’s population depended on these factories.

During the First World War, Matarazzo provided monetary support and much needed goods to Italy. In recognition of his efforts, he was granted the noble title of ‘Count’ by King Victor Emanuel III.

Count Matarazzo died in 1937. At the time, he was the wealthiest person in Brazil.
