Lot Essay

S.J. Rood was founded by the Allen family of merchants in 1873. Their location in Mayfair’s prestigious Burlington Arcade attracted a refined clientele of stylish Londoners, the most notable of which being Mary of Teck, queen consort of King George V. Queen Mary commissioned many pieces from Rood during the first half of the 20th century, bestowing them with her Royal Warrant in 1921. Rood is most notably known for their ‘For…’ rings: a series of twelve rings commissioned by Queen Mary from 1918 to 1951 to gift to her ladies-in-waiting in celebration of their respective wedding engagements. Rood remained in their Burlington Arcade location until 1998 when the business was purchased by another respected British jeweler, Hancocks & Co.
