The natural crystalline form of Aquamarine, the greenish blue to blue variety of gem beryl, often occurs in prodigious sizes. However, most large crystals are either of poor color saturation or low clarity and are not suitable for the cutting of significantly sized gems. In very rare occurrences, large beautiful crystals of fine quality do occur and are highly sought after. One of the most famous examples and the largest faceted aqua, the Smithsonian's 10,363 carat Dom Pedro, was cut from a Brazilian crystal weighing 27 kilograms or 60 pounds. The present example possesses the extraordinary clarity and rich color synonymous with gem aquamarine and has been in a private collection for many decades since its acquisition, purportedly from Brazil.
