Lot Essay

Jewelry from the 1940s and 50s was predominantly crafted in yellow gold, with many jewelers experimenting with new textures, forms and finishes of the metal. As a part of this exploration, Van Cleef & Arpels drew inspiration from textile and fabric, giving birth to the Cheveux D’Ange or ‘Angel Hair’ motif. Composed of parallel threads of solid gold, the designs formed flexible lines that reflect the suppleness of textiles, often enhanced with diamonds. The motif was developed into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, with the present lot being a necklace. Fluid when worn, the necklace evokes the undulating movement of fabric.
