On July 20th, 1969, the world watched as an American spacecraft landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took the first steps onto the lunar surface, making “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

One of only ten made, this brooch commemorates the achievement, one of the most momentous events of the century. A similar brooch was gifted to Pat Nixon from Freddy Wolfers in 1969 and was displayed in the Tokens and Treasures: Gifts to Twelve Presidents exhibition presented by the National Archives in 1996.

The base of the flagpole held by the seated astronaut rests upon the Sea of Tranquility (approximately) where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed.
