Lot Essay

Baigneurs à Nice is an outstanding example of Henri Lachieze-Rey’s light-filled paintings of the beaches of the Côte d’Azur. Capturing a crowded day on the beach of the fashionable Croisette of Nice, Lachieze-Rey portrays in his typical generously worked surface, the languid forms of bathers, striped deckchairs and pops of vivid colour provided by French flags, towels and parasols. The palm trees and dazzling white buildings of the casinos along the boardwalk add to the sensation of the heat and dazzling light of the Riviera sun.

Working between Paris, Lyon and Saint-Tropez, Henri Lachieze-Rey was a painter of modern leisure: in his depictions of cafes and bars, and beaches, Lachièze-Rey sets out to recreate the lively atmosphere of these spots, playing with the framing and showing an influence from his predecessors Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard.
