The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas is held under tension and remains structurally stable. Natural ageing and surface abrasion is evident in the increased transparency of the paint layer. Some scattered scratches in the paint layer are visible in the lower left corner and further zigzagging scratches near her right shoulder. There is further restoration along the edges of the canvas associated with frame wear. Ultraviolet examination reveals a restored irregular vertical tear of approximately 27 cm. in the lower right corner, with further scattered restoration throughout, as well as the sitter's face, and an old streaky varnish. The artist's tender modelling and painterly technique nevertheless remains highly appreciable.
